X’Hemm? Il-Birgu – A Successful Science/Mathematics Popularizartion Event

The X’Hemm? Il-Birgu event, organized by the Department of Curriculum Management in collaboration with the Birgu Local Council, was successfully held between Monday 24th and Friday 28th March.

The aim of this event was to familiarize Year 6 students with everyday concepts that are particularly related with mathematics and science such as measuring techniques, demonstration about the mechanism of pulleys and other activities where the students were actively engaged to practice and show their skills. Moreover, these activities were held in various historical sites and other buildings in the City of Birgu such as the Maritime Museum, the Inquisitor’s Palace, St Dominic Band Club, Couvre Port and also at the new Regional Library.

This event was opened by the Mayor of Birgu, Mr John Boxall where during his speech he encouraged the students to participate as much as they can so that they can benefit from these activities while also exploring some of the historical beauties that city of Birgu can offer. On Friday morning, Hon. Evarist Bartolo, Minister for Education and Employment visited this event at Couvre Port where he addressed the students and at the same time, took the opportunity to visit the new Regional Library. Re-enactments by the In Guardia Parade where also held during the week so that the children could briefly experience what life was like in the city during the 16th century.

Over this week-long activity more than 1,200 students participated in this event which was supported by the Birgu Local Council and Heritage Malta. This is the first time that the Department for Curriculum Management organized such an activity and after the positive feedback that we have received from the schools involved, especially from the students themselves, it will surely not be the last one.
