Titlesta l-mina għad-daħla tal-Birgu

Għadha kemm tlestiet il-mina għad-daħla tal-Birgu li kienet parti minn proġett f’xogħlijiet ta’ restawr fuq il-fortifikazzjonijiet tal-Belt Vittoriosa.

Il-Proġett se jwassal ukoll biex il-foss ta’ madwar Couvre Porte jissebbaħ u b’hekk tkun stabbilita mill-ġdid il-kontinwita lineari tad-daħla, appuntu bil-kostruzzjoni ta’ din il-mina.

Fis-snin li għaddew kienu saru xi xogħlijiet fuq il-ħajt mal-faċċata tas-swar ta’ San Ġwann, tant li l-mina kienet twaqqet biex għamlet wisa’ għat-triq moderna fil-Birgu.

Intant l-iskop ta’ dan il-proġett, li qed isir minn fondi tal-ERDF tal-Unjoni Ewropea u b’koordinazzjoni mill-Ministeru għar-Riżorsi u l-Affarijiet Rurali, hu biex jirrestawra u jirrijabilita l-fortifikazzjonijiet tas-Swar tal-Birgu u l-foss filwaqt li jagħtihom id-dinjita li jixirqilhom.

Il-foss għandu l-potenzjal biex ikun ambjent rikreattiv u li jogħġob l-għajn. Il-proġett tal-ERDF se jkun qed isaħħaħ iz-zona tal-foss biex jagħti importanza lill-aspetti storiċi filwaqt li jenfasizza l-potenzjal rikreattiv.

L-interventi, li ilhom għaddejin minn Jannar tal-2008 – iddisinjati u implimentati mit-Taqsima tar-Restawr fid-Diviżjoni tax-Xogħlijiet – huma mmirati kemm biex isir restawr tal-binjiet eżistenti kif ukoll biex ikun irkuprat l-intervent mhux f’waqtu li kien sar fil-passat u allura jerġa’ jagħti liz-zona l-glorja tant mistħoqqa.

The tunnel to the entrance of Birgu is finally completed

The tunnel at the entrance of Birgu, connecting the fortifications of Couvre Porte with the St John Tower has been completed. This project is part of the restoration works on the fortifications of Vittoriosa, which is currently being done.

This project will also result with the embellishment of the ditch around Couvre Porte, establishing a new linear continuity of the entry of this historical city, precisely with the construction of this tunnel.

After the war, works were done on the facade of the St John Tower bastions and the original tunnel was demolished to make room for a modern street for this City.

Meanwhile the main scope of this ERDF funded project, financed by the European Union, under the co-ordination of the Ministry for Resources & Rural Affairs, is to restore and remediate the fortifications surrounding the City of Birgu and also re-embellish the ditch around the fortifications while giving them the dignity they deserve.

The ditch surely has the potentiality for the recreational environment. This ERDF project will help to strengthen the area of the ditch to give the importance to historical aspects while emphasizing the recreational potentiality.

The interventions which have been ongoing since January of 2008, designed and implemented by the Restoration Unit are aimed to restore the existing buildings as well as to recover the interventions that unfortunately were done in the past and thus will restore again and give the well deserved glory of such magnificent architecture.
