STUDENTS AT ST CLARE COLLEGE SPORTS/FUN DAY HELP BIRGU LOCAL COUNCIL

St Clare College Sports/Fun Day was held on Wednesday 21st April at the Pembroke Girls’ Junior Lyceum area. The 3,100 students who form part of the College attend the Primary Schools of Gzira, Pembroke, San Gwann A & B, San Miguel, and Sliema; the Secondary Schools of Gzira Boys and Pembroke Girls and the Junior Lyceums of Sliema Boys and Pembroke Girls.  After the March past, the students used 4 different venues to participate in the following sports/disciplines: abseiling, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, cricket, dancesport, football, gymnastics, judo, karate, kendo, netball, play volley, rugby, self defence, tchuk ball, tug-of-war, wheelchair dancing and handball. As the College Principal, Ms Maria Ciappara said, “the aim of this activity is to have the College staff and students participating together in this sports activity”. Each student was given a certificate and a small memento. Special thanks go to the: Adventure Shop, AFM, BMX, Coca Cola, H2O, Inspire, KMS, Local Councils of Gżira, Pembroke, San Ġwann, St Julian’s, Sliema and Swieqi, Melita Football Club, MOC, Police Corps, Splash & Fun, and all the staff who worked hard to make this day a memorable one.

The College Principal hails from Vittoriosa (Birgu). The Birgu Local Council is working hard to collect a good number of 2 litre empty bottles in order to be used during the BirguFest 2010 so that, as the Mayor of Birgu, Mr John Boxall said, he aims to have Birgu included in the Guinness Book of Records by lighting 12,000 candles (probably using these plastic bottles) all around this historical city on the 9th October 2010 in the “light a candle, set a record campaign”. For this purpose each and every student and member of staff forming part of St Clare College, was encouraged to bring along these bottles on the 21st April, and was collected at the gate by Birgu representatives. The campaign stops in October 2010.
