Reception for the elderly of the City of Birgu in the occasion of Christmas For the first time ever, the Birgu Local Council, in the occasion of Christmas, decided to organize a reception for all those elderly of the City of Birgu who are recovered in homes for the elderly. The Council, for this reception also invited their relatives. The first party was held on Monday 20th December, 2010, for all the Birgu residents residing at St Vincent de Paule in Luqa, where 18 residents and their relatives attended. The folkloristic group “Jackson’s Pipe Band” entertained them with the “Zaqq & Tambur” where they re-kindled their memories. For this occasion, the Mayor Mr John Boxall and the Councillor Mrs Judith Saliba, the Councillor responsible for cultural activities for the elderly were present. Gifts as well as fruits were given out to the elderly. The next day, Tuesday 21st December, 2010, another reception was held for all those elderly residing at the home for elderly in Bormla, where the elderly together with their relatives attended. For this occasion, the group “Camilleri Trio” were invited to entertain all those present. At the end of this activity, the Councillor, Judith Saliba, gave out the presents and the fruit bags to all the elderly present. During both activities, one could note the expression of joy on the faces of those present as this reception was not only an occasion to celebrate Christmas, but it also served as an occasion for these elderly to meet after various months and some after various years.
The Birgu Local Council is already planning to hold this reception once again next year, however, with one slight difference, where all the elderly residing at homes will be gathered under one roof together with their relatives, and this will be done so that all those who our Gracious Lord will grant them more years will have the possibility to meet once again.
