In the end of November, the Birgu Local Council joined in the European Union project “Oralites”. This programme lead by the City of Evora, will be for four years and will help the eight participating cities to share and exchange cultural values through music and language. The Cities that are participating in the “Oralites” project are the City of Arles in France, Sliven in Bulgaria, Mertola, Evora and Idanha-a-Nova in Portugal, Orense in Spain, Ravenna in Italy and Birgu, Malta. From this particular project the City of Birgu will benefit from more than € 237,000.00.

During this meeting further discussions where held on how the Birgu Local Council will give great opportunities to musicians, singers and actors in various activities which will be held in the mentioned cities around Europe, during 2009, 2010 and 2011.

In December, the Birgu Local Council will be issuing a call for application so that musicians, singers and actors could apply and interviews, to chose the representative of the Birgu Local Council and Malta will be held in January. Opportunities will be mainly for singers and groups of traditional and pop music, early renaissance music and actors who will be willing to do short sketches, as well as for writers and poets.

In this project, eight festivals will be held by the musicians, singers and actors from all participating cities and one of these festivals will have to be organised in Malta, exactly in the Maritime and Historic City of Birgu.  Not only, the project will also help to organize, on a smaller scale, festivals, commonly known as circuits, where the first festival of this kind will be organised in Birgu on the 9th of May, 2009. This will be organised the day after, the general meeting of the Oralites project in Birgu will be held.

The other organizers and participating cities, were impressed by the cultural activities that continuously are being organised in Birgu. Infact during the kick off meeting in Evora, Portugal, they were shown a short video of the activities organised in Birgu during the year, mixed with shots from the everyday life of the citizens of Birgu together with shots portraying the number of tourists visiting our City, which day after day is increasing with in popularity with all those visiting Malta.  In the coming days, the Birgu Local Council, will be publishing a call for application related with this project, therefore all those musicians, singers and actors can easily apply within the Birgu Local Council.
