International Conference organized by RETE, Association for the Collaboration between Cities and Ports.
 
Mr. John Boxall, Mayor of the Maritime City of Birgu, accompanied by Ms. Ann Gulic attended the International Conference in Naples in June 2014, an event, which was co-produced by The Naples Shipping Week and The Universal Forum of The cultures of Naples.
Various important topics were discussed during the week ranging from Port Efficiency, Ports and local employment, Port-City Effectiveness to Ports and the Environment . A very vital part of the Conference with special interest for Birgu's Maritime harbour was the section titled 'BACK TO THE MED'- which is a new challenge for Mediterranean Countries: The collaboration between Port and City involving innovation and Development'. The Conference was organized by RETE which was specifically dedicated to the development of the port-urban waterfront.
Special emphasis was given to the relationship between cities/inhabitants and port areas, the evaluation and reconversion of the latter with specific aims towards the benefit of the inhabitants and the improvement of the competitiveness of the various maritime quays.
OECD Port Cities Programme presented(2010-2013) presented a multi-year program which consisted of:
•a series of place-specific case studies: Le Havre/Paris, Hamburg, Helsinki, Marseille, Rotterdam/Amsterdam, Mersin Danube Axis, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Antofagasta.
•Thematic Papers covered areas such as: Benefits from Ports such as Trade and Employment and Negative Port Impacts.
Present for the Rete Conference were Emilio Broguiera Dias, President Of Rete, Port Administration of Douro and Leixos, Porto.

Rinio Bruttomesso, Scientific Representative of The Conference ,Director of The scientific Committee of RETE, Venice. Other representatives hailed from different important Mediterranean ports like Valencia, Lebanon, Barcelona,, Minorca, Lisbon, Palma de Mallorca.
The Conference was summed by a Round Table where the Challenge of Maritime Cities was discussed. The moderator was Professor Carlo Gasparrini, Department of Architecture, Naples University'Federico11'.
