The CO-TO-GEN project (Connecting Towns and Generation Through Dialogue, Culture and Traditional Games), part financed by the European Union, done between the village of Belvi, in the heart of Sardinia and the City of Birgu.

On Tuesday 11 December, 2012, a group of twenty-five residents of Birgu departed for the village of Belvi in the heart of Sardinia representing their Local Council that of the City of Birgu, to participate in the project CO-TO-GEN part financed by the European Union taking place between the 11th and 17th of December, 2012.

This group consisting of different age groups, under the guidance of the Vice Mayor, Mr. Trevor Mizzi and Mrs. Moira Azzopardi, employed with the Council, who has also the responsibility of this project, during their stay in this village, have a vast programme of seven days prepared for them.

Upon their arrival in the small village where six hundred and sixty seven people live, the group will be welcomed by the Council of the village of Belvi, as well as by the families hosting the Birgu residents in their homes.

On Thursday 13 December at around half eight in the evening, the Mayor of Birgu, Mr. John Boxall will be joining the group, where together with the Mayor of Belvi, Mr. Rinaldo Arangino, will kick off the traditional Maltese night where typical Maltese food and drinks will be served by the group from Vittoriosa.

This is the second visit of the Mayor of Birgu to this village, where last April, he was invited by the Council of Belvi to visit this village, to see what roots do these localities have in common, and moreover to see what possibilities are there to apply for EU funded projects. Together both localities looked upon starting the procedure to be twinned together. Over the last months, a lot of work by both cities was done to achieve the desired result, that of having the village of Belvi, in the heart of Sardegna, sign a twinning agreement with the Maltese City of Birgu.

It is for this reason, that the Mayor of Birgu, Mr. John Boxall, will return to this village, where on the 14th of December, during a ceremony which will be held in the amphitheatre of this locality, both Mayors will read and sign the twinning rite between the two localities. For this symbolic ceremony, the Vice Mayor and the Councillors of Belvi will be present as well as the residents of this locality, together with the Vice Mayor of Birgu, Mr. Trevor Mizzi, accompanied by the Maltese group. Representatives from the Commission of the European Union together with a number of journalists will also be present.
