The purpose of the European Enterprise Awards, is to identify and reward excellence among public authorities in promoting entrepreneurship and small businesses, on regional and local level.

Each year, more than three hundred initiatives in each participating country (EU member states and Norway) compete in a nationwide competition. A high level jury from Europe choose the winners, who are announced during a specially organised event where all nominees are invited.

In the European Enterprise Awards 2008/2009, there were twenty-five countries, competing on a national level, and over three hundred and fifty national, regional or local authorities which participated, included cities, villages and regions, as well as public-private partnerships (public private partnerships) between public authorities and entrepreneurs, educational and business programs.

The jury considered forty seven final nominations which represented a wide variety of projects that were successful in facilitating business and backed entrepreneurship across Europe.

Winners were notified during a closing ceremony of the first European Week of Small and Medium Businesses.

The Great Prize of the jury went to the “Scarborough Renaissance Partnership” for their enterprise and cultural work in the city of Yorkshire of Scarborough in the North of England. The project was chosen for the impressive results, which address the issue of seasonal unemployment and developing a stable economy during the year involving the local community.

The result reflect increases in job creation, particularly through developing a commercial park, and a centre of creativity and cultural state of the art industries.

This year 338 national authorities, regional and local, as well as towns and villages and regions, public-private partnerships (public private partnerships) , all competed for the nomination of this European competition, where each country may choose up to two candidates. Exchanges of good practices and experiences raised by the European Enterprise Awards, met the primary objective, which were to be identified and recognized activities and successful initiatives, taken to promote entrepreneurship to showcase examples of best practices in entrepreneurship and to create awareness of the role of entrepreneurs in society and to encourage and inspire other entrepreneurs.
