The Dutch Couple Mr. Remco and Mrs. Jessical Slik sponsored a computer course for all the children of Birgu
aged between five and ten years The Directors of the Five Star Boutique Hotel “Palazzo Vittoriosa”, the couple Slik, on Wednesday 26th May, 2010, presented their sponsor to the Birgu Local Council, so that in the summer months a computer course will be organised for free for all the children of Birgu aged five (5) to ten (10) years. During this course, the children will also be offered healthy food during their recreation. This presentation was held at the Regional Library, located in one of the prestigious Historical building, found in Birgu, the Auberge d’Angleterre. The Mayor of Birgu, Mr. John Boxall, in his short speech, on behalf of the Birgu Local Council, and the children of this locality, thanked the Dutch couple for sponsoring this course and added that this was a very noble gesture and a great investment in the children of this City. The Mayor, continued by adding that this gesture by the couple Slik, should be seen as a better guarantee for a better future for the children and the future generation of this Maritime City. This should set as a clear example to the other entrepreneurs to further invest in education and give their share value in this area. Hoping that in the near future, Birgu, will have others like the couple Slik, who out of their own will, will help the Birgu Local Council, to achieve their goal set for the educational sector, so that this City, will not be only the better but the best. It was then Mr. Remco Slik’s time, to make a short speech, who said, that Palazzo Vittoriosa, their Five Star bed and breakfast, which will open in Spring next year, is obviously a huge investment, however, today they are here to confirm their commitment for a much more important investment, an investment in the children of Birgu. Mr. and Mrs. Slik are very happy that they can be part of this summer school project, enabling the young children to acquire computer skills, completely free of charge. The importance of this project can not be overstated. Experts tell us that in five years time, 90% of all jobs will require ICT Skills. Further more international studies show that from every Euro, that is spent on education, 7 Euros will come back in return. That is why, he added, that they are convinced, that this project is going to be a great success. Ms. Slik said that they are looking forward, for this course to start and wish that all the participants, will have fun learning new skills. Mr. Remco Slik ended his speech by thanking the Birgu Local Council for the support being given to him and his wife, during the ongoing of their project, the first one of its kind in this City and this is only a small gesture to reciprocate. |
