His Excellency Fra John Edward Critien - Knight Resident at Fort St. Angelo

Fra John Edward Critien, born in Sliema on 29 September 1949, is the younger son of the late Major Frank Edward Critien, E.D., K.M., K.St.J., and the late May Critien nee Grech.

After graduating Bachelor of Arts at the Royal University of Malta, John Edward Critien continued his studies in Italy at the University for Foreigners of Perugia and the State University of Pisa. John Edward Critien then settled in Pisa for 22 years where he taught English Language and Literature at a private institute of languages "Scuola Mondolingue".

John Edward Critien was admitted into the Grand Priory of Rome of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta in 1983 after having distinguished himself in the formation of voluntary youth groups of the Order in Pisa and Florence. In 1993 he professed perpetual religious vows as Knight of Justice in the same Order.

John Edward Critien was elected Member of Sovereign Council (Government) of the Order in 1994 and held this position until 1999. Between 1994 and 2000 he lived at the world headquarters of the Sovereign Order in Palazzo Malta, via Condotti, Rome. During these 6 years John Edward Critien also occupied the position of Conservator of the Magistral Palace Library and Archives and Curator of the art collections of the Order.

In July 2000 he was appointed Knight Resident at Fort St. Angelo, the position he currently holds.

In September 2001 he was elevated to the rank of Knight Grand Cross of Justice, the first ever Maltese to hold this grade in the Order.

His Excellency Fra John Critien, has been received into various orders of chivalry and honoured with the award of prestigious decorations amongst which are:

  • Grand Cross of Merit of the S.M.O. of Malta
  • Grand Cross of Merit of the Republic of Italy
  • Grand Cross of the Order of St. Gregory the Great
  • Grand Cross of Justice of the Constantinian Order of St. George
  • Grand Cross of the Order of St. Maurice and St. Lazarus
  • Grand Cross of the Crown of Yugoslavia
  • as well as decorations from Spain, Austria, Morocco and San Marino.

Fra John Critien has been involved in the mounting of art exhibitions in Italy and Malta and has published articles of a historic-artistic nature on subjects such as bookbindings, numismatics and rare manuscripts found in the Magistral Palace Archives in Rome.

His excellency Fra John Critien is a member of Rotary Club Malta and Honorary President of St. Lawrence Band Club and the Prince of Wales Own Band Club, both in Birgu. His interests also include reading, gardening, travel and the study of Chinese ceramics.
