Fondazzjoni Xjuħija Attiva: Xjuħija Attiva fi bliet u rħula Maltin

Laqgħa fil-Birgu, 13 ta’ Ġunju, 2013

1.    Il-Fondazzjoni

Il-Fondazzjoni Xjuħija Attiva hija NGO li ġiet imwaqqfa f’Jannar tal-2013 (VO/0785). Hija mmexxija minn kumitat li jinkludi lil David Mamo, Stephen Mangion, Anne McKenna, Rose Mills, Antoinette Powell, Joseph Spiteri, Maria Taliana, u Nadienne Zammit Fiott.

2.    Kif twaqqfet il-Fondazzjoni

Il-bżonn ta’ fondazzjoni dwar ix-Xjuħija Attiva inħass minn membri tar-“Red Cross Visiting Service for Old Persons” li twaqqaf fl-2011 bil-għan li voluntiera jżuru u jorganizzaw attivitajiet għal residenti fid-djar tal-anzjani. Anne McKenna u Rose Mills, fundaturi ta’ dan is-servizz ġew imħeġġa biex joħolqu xi tip ta’ struttura formali li tindirizza l-interessi tal-anzjani, u kien għalhekk li bdiet il-ħidma sabiex titwaqqaf Fondazzjoni Xjuħija Attiva Malta.

3.    L-Anzjanità Attiva x’inhi?

Il-kunċett ta’ Anzjanita` Attiva jmur lil hinn mill-ħarsien tas-saħħa tal-anzjani jew minn sempliċement kunċett ta’ kobor fl-età. Il-kunċett ta’ Anzjanità Attiva wasslitulna l-WHO fis-snin disgħin bħala rejazzjoni għal dak li kien isir sa dak iż-żmien, fejn l-ideja ta’ Anzjanità f’saħħitha kienet iffokata wisq fuq il-mard u s-saħħa. Kien jidher biċ-ċar li din il-viżjoni pjuttost magħluqa ta’ saħħa mentali u fiżika waħedhom, kienet qeda tħalli barra it-tielet pilastru tas-saħħa, dak li l-WHO issejjaħlu l-ħarsien soċjali. Tant hu hekk li l-kunċett tal-Anzjanità Attiva jħaddan il-ħarsien soċjali u l-kwalità ta’ ħajja bħala aspetti fundamentali, u jħeġġeg għal aktar opportunatijiet mhux biss għal ħarsien tas-saħħa in ġenerali imma wkoll għall-parteċipazzjoni sħiħa fis-soċjetà u għal sens ta’ sigurtà fis-soċjetà hekk kif nikbru.

4.    Il-viżjoni u l-missjoni tagħna

l-Anzjanità Attiva tfisser, għalhekk, li nibqgħu nagħtu sehemna u li jibqa’ jkollna wkoll responsabbiltajiet b’mod attiv fis-soċjetà u lejn is-soċjetà, aktar milli nistennew li nieħdu minn għandha biss. Biex dan iseħħ hemm bżonn ta’ bidla sħiħa, kemm bħala individwi kif ukoll bħala soċjetà, bidla fil-mod ta’ kif inħarsu lejn l-affarijiet, u ta’ kif infasslu “policies” godda.

Fondazzjoni Xjuħija Attiva inħolqot b’viżjoni ta’ soċjetà Maltija li tagħti s-setgħa lil nies anzjani li jkunu jistgħu jibqgħu involuti b’mod attiv fil-kommunità, kemm jekk ikunu jgħixu ġewwa darhom stess kif ukoll jekk jgħixu f’xi residenza tal-anzjani. Viżjoni ta’ soċjetà li tagħti s-setgħa lill-anzjani li jibqgħu ikollhom l-ogħla livell ta’ indipendenza possibli u li jkunu jistgħu jibqgħu jagħtu l-kontribut tagħhom fis-soċjetà.

L-għan tal-Fondazzjoni hu li tippromwovi l-ħarsien tal-kwalità ta’ ħajja tal-individwu, kif ukoll il-parteċipazzjoni bis-sħiħ fuq livelli soċjali, kulturali, u ta’ vokazzjoni tul ħajjitna. U dan permezz ta’ riċerka, edukazzjoni u billi wieħed jitkellem fuq jew jagħmel rakkomandazzjonijiet f’dan ir-rigward.

Sabiex nilħqu dan il-għan, inħossu l-bżonn li :

a.      nibdew nedukaw sabiex inbiddlu l-mod ta’ kif iż-żgħażagħ iħarsu lejn ix-xjuħija,
b.      inħeġġu għal tibdil ta’ “policies” sabiex permezz tagħhom il-poplu jkun jista’ jixjieħ fil-komunità b’mod aktar attiv.
c.      inħeġġu għal sforz volontarju akbar fil-qasam tal-anzjani, u
d.      inwaqqfu fergħa tal-Fondazzjoni f’kull distrett.

Il-membri tal-Fondazzjoni kienu ilhom jiltaqgħu b’mod regolari minn diversi xhur qabel ma’ twaqqfet il-fondazzjoni, sewwa sew minn Ottubru tal-2012. F’dan iż-żmien iltqajna ma’ diversi “stakeholders” u bdejna nistudjaw u niffukaw fuq l-oqsma li ħassejna li għandhom ikunu ta’ prijorita` għalina. Wieħed mill-ewwel proġetti tagħna kien li, f’kollaborazzjoni mal-Universita ta’ Malta, jsir studju dwar f’liema qagħda jinsabu diversi lokalitajiet Maltin fejn tidħol l-anzjanità attiva, kemm jistgħu jippromwovu u saħansitra kemm hu possibbli li wieħed jixjieħ b’mod attiv f’dawn il-lokalitajiet . Ħassejna wkoll il-bżonn li f’din l-ewwel sena tagħna niffukaw fuq il-kwalità ta’ ħajja ta’ dawk li jgħixu ġewwa d-djar tal-anzjani. Sa minn kmieni nixtiequ noħolqu djalogu ma’ kull min hu interessat fil-komunitajiet tagħna sabiex permezz ta’ dan id-djalogu joħroġ dak li għandu jsir sabiex f’kull lokalità jinħolqu strutturi ta’ sapport u solidarjeta għal dawk l-anzjani li jixtiequ jixjieħu b’mod attiv.

Foundation for Active Ageing: Promoting Active Ageing in Maltese Communities

Birgu Workshop, June 13th, 2013

1. Introduction of members:

The Foundation for Active Ageing, a registered non-governmental organization (NGO), was founded in January 2013. It is governed by a committee consisting of David Charles Mamo, Stephen Mangion, Anne McKenna, Rose Mills, Antoinette Powell, Joseph Spiteri, Maria Taliana, and Nadienne Zammit Fiott.

2. History of FXAM:

The need for a foundation that advocates for active ageing arose from another community organization founded and co-led by Anne McKeena and Rose Mills. The Malta Red Cross Visiting Service for Older Persons, founded in 2011, was set up to visit and organize social activities for residents in long -term homes. They were then encouraged by Dr. Marvin Formosa to create a formal structure that would address the interests of older persons – an idea that led to the formation of the Foundation.

3. The concept of Active Ageing

What exactly is “Active Ageing” and why not simply “Healthy Ageing” or even “Ageing”? The concept of Active Ageing was introduced by the World Health Organization in the 1990’s in reaction to a belief that our previous focus on Healthy Ageing was too narrowly focused on Health and Disease. It had become abundantly clear that the focus on physical and mental health had neglected the third pillar of “health” as defined by the WHO, which is “social well-being”. Indeed, Active Ageing places social well-being and quality of life as core aspects of Active Ageing, calling for increasing opportunities not only for good health but also participation in society and a sense of security as we age.

4. Why was FXAM formed: Our Vision & Mission

Active Ageing therefore implies continued participation and active responsibility in and for society rather than adopting an attitude of passive recipients. This requires of us, both as individuals as well as a society as a whole, to undergo a radical change in attitudes and policy.

FXAM was created with a vision of a Maltese society that empowers older persons to remain actively engaged in their community irrespective of their residential setting, to maintain the highest level of independence possible, and continue to contribute to society.

The goal of our Foundation is the promotion of personal well-being, and social, cultural and vocational engagement in the Maltese community through research, education, and advocacy.

To meet our goals, we want to

(a) modify young peoples’ attitudes to ageing and old age though education,
(b) lobby for policy changes to enable people to live actively in the community,
(c) encourage more voluntary efforts to improve the lives of older people, and
(d) set up a branch for the foundation in every district.

The members of our Foundation have been meeting regularly since October 2012, many months before the official launch. During this time we focused our efforts in meeting with various stakeholders, and to study and identify areas of priorities. One of our first projects was to engage in the study of the state of our Maltese communities and their ability to promote and enable Active Ageing though a collaborative study with the University of Malta. Our identified priorities for our first year are the need for measurable standards for homes of the elderly and to create a forum for dialogue with community stakeholders to facilitate the development of grass-root initiatives towards models of community support and solidarity as we age.
