SECRET Project Exhibition in Birgu
“Participation with Joint Project Stand”

‘SECRET’ (Sustainable Eco-Cultural Responsible European Tourism) is an EU funded project under the Europe for Citizens programme.

The project has the Municipality of Volos in Greece as the Lead Partner. The other partners are the Cities of Brezno in Slovakia, Limbazi in Latvia, Paphos in Cyprus and Birgu in Malta.

It was time for the Maritime City of Birgu to host the next meeting for this project, after having attended conferences in the above mentioned cities during these past two years. Thus, between Friday 11th and Sunday 13th of May 2012, Birgu organised the exhibition entitled “Participation with joint project stand” for which all municipalities, members of the project, put up their stand to showcase the tastes and attractions of their respective cities.

The exhibition was set up at one of the most prestigious historical buildings in the City of Birgu, that of the Auberge de France and it was officially inaugurated by Hon. Dr. Carm Mifsud Bonnici, Minister of Home Affairs and the Local Government, in the presence of Hon. Dr Stefan Buontempo, Shadow Minister for Local Government. The Mayor of Birgu, Mr John Boxall, Mr Manos Vougioukas, ‘SECRET’ project coordinator, Mr Peter van Roosmalen, President of the European Walled Towns, and Mr Nikos Stoikos, Vice Mayor of Volos, respectively, addressed all those present for the inauguration. A large number of foreigners, making part of the Walled Towns Friendship Circle, in which Birgu is a member, who were in Malta for the Executive Meeting of the Circle, were also present.

Many people, locals and foreigners, visited this exhibition during these 3 days.

The foreign delegates, members in the SECRET project, had a full 3 day programme, including guided tour of the cities of Birgu and Valletta. In Birgu they were accompanied by a re-enactment of Knights, whose service was kindly provided by the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), and they also went on a most appreciated boat ride around the Grand Harbour.

The final meeting of this project is planned to be held between the 29th and 30th of June 2012 in the lead partner’s city, Volos in Greece. The Birgu Local Council is enthusiast that once this project is over, new opportunities for the benefit of Birgu, Malta’s Maritime Capital City, will come up.
