The Birgu Local Council proposes Ms. Nikita Mizzi as the Youth of the Year 2015, whom was chosen amongst other finalists for the reward.

Nikita Mizzi, a 22 year old from Vittoriosa, is a kind and dedicated person who is passionate about volunteering with the less fortunate. She works in the catering industry and occupies the position of Assistant Restaurant Manager. She is an organised and helpful person and makes sure that the things that need to be done get done. For two summers, she left everything behind her and went to help less fortunate children in Kosovo.

I had the opportunity to share last summer’s experience with her, when we were organising summer camps for children with the sisters of Mother Theresa. The preparations started way before the actual experience .Nikita was one of the barnstormers of the group which came up with some good ideas to organize a couple of fundraising events to collect money for the Sisters. The main activity was a successful Pasta night organised at one of the greatest locations in Malta; Couvre Porte. In Kosovo, she was taking care of children between the ages of 7-11. It turned out that with the first group of children were gypsy and the group Nikita was working with was quite challenging and needed varied activities without breaks to keep them entertained. When we prepared the crafts and activities, Nikita was always open and flexible and took into consideration the other volunteers ideas and opinions, especially the Albanian volunteers’ opinions before we agreed on a programme for the next day. She was always prepared to help out when other volunteers were struggling; both mentally and even with the preparation of crafts and activities. She was a great asset for the entire group.

As a community of Maltese volunteers we divided daily tasks such as cooking and washing clothes between us between us. Nikita was one of those people who offered help even when it wasn’t her turn to do that particular duty.

The days in Kosovo were tiring and we had a lot of work to do every day. Some days when we still had some task to perform and things to prepare and it was nearing evening people would start getting short tempered because we’d all be tired. Nikita was always there to give that extra push to the entire group and tried to hurry things along and be as efficient as possible so we’d have more time to relax and unwind after a long day.
Nikita believe in spending most of her free time volunteering in different aspects; she also helps in the organisation of some local activities such as Birgu Fest , where every year she is a Group leader doing historical tours around Birgu for primary school students and Birgu by candlelight, where she forms part of a group of youths who light up the candles around the narrow streets of Vittoriosa, which lead to the successful outcome of the Birgu by candlelight every year.

This year, Nikita, also took part in a CHOGM Youth Forum activity, where she was part of a youth group who acted as tour leaders and toured a group of youths (from around the world) around Birgu.

During her free time she also helps out at some local Animal sanctuaries.

Ms. Nikita Mizzi is being given recognition as the finalist of Youth of the Year 2015 from the President of Malta, Her Excellency, Marie Louise Coleiro Preca
