Beyond Signs in the City - Kick off Meeting

‘Signs in the city’ is one of the EU projects that the Birgu Local Council is participating in. This project promotes foreign languages through city signs. These include signs in the streets of the city, historical heritage, architecture artistic features, graffiti, sports, leisure, traffic, transport, maps, events, shops and restaurants, etc.

From the 27th till 30th January 2009, the Councillor, Mrs Miriam Grech, and Ms Fiorella Scicluna, clerk responsible for the project, attended a meeting in Sofia, Bulgaria regarding ‘Beyond Signs in the City’, a project which is a continuation of a previously acknowledged project, ‘Signs in the city’, in which the Birgu Local Council was one of the main partners.

In this project, there are five main partners, being the City of Dobrich in Bulgaria, Athens in Greece, Gdansk in Poland, Barcelona in Spain and the City of Birgu in Malta. However, after the kick off meeting three other cities joined in, which were the City of Graz in Austria, Miercurea Ciuc in Romania and Izmir in Turkey.

During this meeting it was discussed how each partner can promote their respective city amongst other cities in Europe. With the help of this project, the Maritime City of Birgu will benefit through tourism, as people will be more aware of Birgu and its culture. This will be done through signs and documentaries. Prominent landmarks of Birgu will be shown to promote our living culture especially the way how the people of Birgu live their life and past time.

In this meeting it turned out that Birgu is the most popular and interesting city amongst the cities in this project.
