“EMERGING” Ta' Ms Bernice Buhagiar. Berga Ta' Franza, Birgu
Bernice Buhagiar, in collaboration with Birgu Local Council, would be having her first solo exhibition “Emerging” to be held at Auberge de France, Hilda Tabone Street, Birgu.
Bernice describes art as: “the breath which keeps me alive, the blood in my veins. Art is an aspect in my life which has never disappointed me. My painting is what keeps me going.”
For Bernice painting is the gateway through which she escapes to a different world, which is boundless. Mingled with the paint and mixed media on canvas or wood, are the hidden emotions which determine the paintings. “When I express myself through painting, I can put my feelings into perspective. As a poet writes his inner feelings onto paper, I bring them out through the brush movements, mixed media and colours, without the need of words.” She claims that “Me and my art are unique and inseparable.”
That is what inspires her- not the calm sea of life, but the deep stormy water, endless with sadness and complications, where she feels part of the water, engulfed in it. Bernice regards art as a tool which can vibrate a message to the viewer, thus, being a benefit for humanity. The artist believes that her paintings are not only expressions of her own feelings, but also encourage others to reflect and think on the painting’s mood, thus having an effect on the public in general.
The art collection “Emerging” is based on the female nude, portrayed through different expressive emotions. The play of light and shadow is a major characteristic which runs through all the paintings, where the figure is concealed in the darkness, and emerging into the light, thus creating interesting movements and effect. The female nude symbolises the naked soul of each of us, which is led by our involuntary inner expressions and emotions, such as sorrow, fear, pain, anger, perseverance and joy.
Each painting has its own personality, determined by the painting's mood, which is reflected through the choice of colours, textures, expression and pose of the figure, which is sometimes also influenced by myth or fiction. The mediums and techniques used, acrylic, impasto, collage and printing, are aimed to create a vast array of interesting expressive textures, which echo the painting's vibe.
The exhibition is to be inaugurated by the artist Mr. Anthony Patrick Vella on Friday 25th March at 7.30pm, and would run till Sunday 3rd April.
Weekdays and Saturdays open from 5 till 8pm. Thursday 31st March (Public Holiday) and Sundays- from 9am till noon and from 5 till 8pm.
As a token of gratitude to the Birgu Local Council, Bernice will kindly donate one of the paintings to be exhibited to be held at Auberge de France.

Bernice Buhagiar, b’ kollaborazzjonimal- Kunsill Lokali tal-Birgu, tipprezenta l-ewwel esebizzjoni taghha, “Emerging” fil- Berga at’ Franza, Triq Hilda Tabone, Birgu.
“Ghalija l-arti hija n-nifs li ttini l-hajja, li tghinni niggenera u nifhem aktar lili nnifsi. Hi l-arti li tghinni nkompli ghaddejja. L-arti tieghi hi personali hafna. Fit-tpingijiet hemm minsugin il-hsibijiet l-aktar fondi. Ghalija l-arti hija mezz kif nesprimi lili nnifsi meta l-kliem ikunu limitati.”
Bernice hi spirata mill-problemi u t-taqlib kollu tal-hajja, fejn apparti li tesprimi ruhha hi stess, l-ghan taghha hu li permess tal-pitturi iggieghel lil haddiehor jahseb u jirrifletti. Dak hu l-ghan taghha ghall-udjenza- permezz tal-arti, l-umanita' tista tiggwadanja. L-arti hi mezz kif tghaddi messaggi indiretti.
Il kollezzjoni “Emerging” hija bbazata fuq fuq il-figura femminili nuda f'perspetttivi differenti. Bernice tuza il-figura nuda bhala simbolu tal-ispirtu taghna, li hu mzewwaq jew imtabba’ bl-emozzjonijiet involuntarji taghna, bhal ferh, ghira, dwejjaq, rabja u biza‘. Karatteristika ewlenija li hi komuni fil-pitturi kollha hu l-loghob ta’ bejn id-dawl u d-dell, u kif id-dawl johloq impressjonijiet interessanti. Il-figuri huma mohbijin fid-dlam, bhal li kieku fil-mument li huma mpingijin, hergin bil-mod il-mod fid- dawl.
Kull pittura hi storja differenti minn ta’ hdejha ghax hi ddeterminata mill-emozzjonijiet inidivdwali ta’ dik il-pittura. Din tirrifletti l-ghazla tal- kuluri, il-materjal u it-teknici wzati, kif ukoll il-poza tal- figura, gie li bhala personagg minn mitologija Griega jew storja tal-fantasija. Bernice tuza varjazzjoni kbira ta’ materjal differenti biex tohloq burdata differenti. Dan jghamel il-pittura aktar interessanti u l-messagg ikun aktar effettiv. Bernice tqis il- pittura mhux biss bhala ghodda biex twassal messagg, izda ghandha tkun festa ghall-qalb, ghall-mohh u ghas sensi umani, fejn bniedem jiehu gost ihares lejn il-pittura, li twasslu ghal riflessjoni u hsibijiet kif l-artista kellha f’mohhha.
L-esebizzjoni se tkun inawgurata mill- artist Anthony Patrick Vella nhar il-Gimgha 25 ta’ Marzufis-7.30pm, u tibqa’ miftuha ghall-pubbliku sal- Hadd 3 t’ April.
Mit- Tnejn sas- Sibt miftuha mill- 5 sat- 8pm. Nhar il- Hamis 31 at’ MArzu (festa pubblika) u l-Hdud miftuha mid- 9am sa nofsinhar u mill- 5 sat-8 pm.
Bhala ringrazzjament lill- Kunsill Lokali tal-Birgu, Bernice se toffri wahda mill- pitturi esebixxiti ghall- Berga ta’ Franza.
