Żjara tad-Duka ta’ Gloucester fil-Belt tal-Birgu

 

 

Nhar il-Ħadd 15 t’April, 2012, id-Duka ta’ Gloucester, il-Prinċep Richard, ir-rappreżentant speċjali tar-Reġina Eliżabetta II, għat-tifkira li saret fl-istess ġurnata, għas-70 anniversarju mill-għoti tal-George Cross lill-poplu Malti, żar il-Belt Marittima tal-Birgu.

 

Id-Duka ta’ Gloucester, ġie milqugħ mall-wasla tiegħu f’Couvre Porte, mill-Kunsill Lokali tal-Birgu rapprezentat mill-Viċi Sindku, s-Sur Trevor Mizzi u mill-Kunsilliera, s-Sur Anton Gellel u s-Sur Lawrence Attard, flimkien mas-Segretarja Eżekuttiva, s-Sinjorina Christine Bonello.  Sfortunatament, is-Sindku, s-Sur John Boxall, ma setax ikun preżenti peress li huwa kien qiegħed jirrapreżenta lill-Belt tal-Birgu fil-Belt ta’ Belvi ġewwa Sardinja, għal preparamenti ta’ ġemellaġġ, filwaqt li l-Kunsillier Alan Cassar, ma setax jattendi minħabba raġunijiet ta’ xogħol.

 

Id-Duka ta’ Gloucester, akkumpanjat mill-British High Commissioner, is-Sinjura Louise Stanton, flimkien mall-Viċi Sindku, s-Sur Trevor Mizzi, żaru l-Mużew tat-Tieni Gwerra Dinija, li jinsab f’Couvre Porte u wara żaru s-sede tal-Għaqda Mużikali Prince of Wales Own. Id-Delegazzjoni komplew l-viżita fil-Birgu billi għaddew minn diversi toroq li jikkaretterizzaw lil din il-Belt fil-qalba tal-Kottonera.

 

L-Eċċellenza Tiegħu, wara żar ukoll il-Berġa tal-Ingilterra, li tospita l-librerija Reġjonali fil-Birgu. Hawnhekk, d-Duka għal darba’oħra ltaqa’ mall-Kunsill Lokali tal-Birgu, fejn ġie ppreżentat lilu r-rigal taż-żewġ volumi tal-kotba, “Birgu – A Maritime City”, u kellu l-opportunita li jiffirma l-ktieb tal-Viżitaturi tal-istess Kunsill.

 

Matul iż-żjara tiegħu fil-Birgu, d-Duka ta’ Gloucester nnota x-xogħlijiet estensivi li qegħdin isiru fil-Belt Kapitali Marittima tal-Birgu, partikolarment ix-xogħol ta’ restawr li qiegħed isir mal-fortifikazzjonijiet li jdawwru lil din il-Belt storika.   

 

 

 

 
 
 
 
The Visit of the Duke of Gloucester to the City of Birgu
 
 
On Sunday 15 April, 2012, the Duke of Gloucester, Prince Richard, who was in Malta as the appointed representative of Queen Elizabeth II, for the commemoration held on the same day, of the 70th anniversary of the award of the George Cross to the Maltese people, visited the Maritime City of Birgu.
 
The Duke of Gloucester, upon arrival at Couvre Porte, was greeted by the Birgu Local Council, represented by the Deputy Mayor, Mr Trevor Mizzi, Councilors, Mr Anthony Gellel and Mr Lawrence Attard and the Executive Secretary, Ms Christine Bonello. Unfortunately, the Mayor, Mr John Boxall, could not be present as he was representing the City of Birgu in the City of Belvi, Sardinia, in a preparation phase of a twinning agreement, whilst Councillor, Mr Alan Cassar, could not attend as he was working.
 
The Duke of Gloucester accompanied by Bristish High Comissioner, Ms Louise Stanton, together with the Deputy Mayor, Mr Trevor Mizzi, visited the Malta at War Museum situated at Couvre Porte, followed by a visit to the seat of the Musical Society, Prince of Wales Own. The delegation continued their visit in Birgu by passing through the narrow and winding roads which characterize this City in the heart of Cottonera.
 
His Excellency, then also visited the Auberge D’Angleterre, which hosts the Regional Library of Birgu. The Duke, here met once again with the Local Council of Birgu, who presented him with the gift of the two volumes of books, "Birgu – A Maritime City", and had the opportunity to sign the Visitor’s book of the same Council.
 
Then, the Delegation continued their visit, by visiting the Parish Church of St. Lawrence and the Maritime Museum, situated in the Vittoriosa Waterfront.
 
During his visit in Vittoriosa, the Duke of Gloucester, saw the extensive works being done in the Maritime Capital City of Birgu, particularly the restoration works taking place on the fortifications surrounding this Historic City.
