In the area of projects financed by the European Union, the Birgu local Council is working hand in hand with Fondazzjoni Temi Zammit, an agency who works and focuses on bringing funds from the European Union. In fact in May 2007, the Birgu Local Council was informed about the approval of the “MedCOAST.net – Mediterranean Co-operation for on- shore accessibility and sustainability themes: Network for managing urban coastal areas”.

As part of the upgrading works being done in St. Lawrence Street, the Birgu Local Council took the initiative to upgrade the central found in this street corner with Triq ic-Centinarju tal-Parocca.

Workers assigned with the Local Council planted new plants and tree in this soft area.

The Birgu Local Council during the year 2009 and 2010, participated actively in the “Beyond Signs in the City” project, a project co-funded by the European Union, under the Education and Culture programme.

Bejn il-Ħamis 9 u l-Ġimgħa 10 ta’ Diċembru 2010 fi Brezno ġewwa s-Slovakkja saret it-tielet konferenza tal-proġett “SECRET” - Sustainable Eco-Cultural Responsible European Tourism.  Parti minn dan il-proġett hija ffinanzjata mill-Unjoni Ewropea fejn il-Kunsill Lokali tal-Birgu huwa msieħeb fih flimkien mal-Muniċipalita ta’ Agria fil-Greċja li hija l-imsieħba prinċipali, u l-Muniċipalitajiet ta’ Pafos f’Ċipru, Brezno fis-Slovakkja, Limbazi fil-Latvja u Szentgotthard fl-Ungerija.
