The Mayor, Mr John Boxall, together with the Executive Secretary, Ms Christine Bonello, attended the AVEC General Assembly held in Mertola, Portugal between the 14th and 18th of May 2008.

The Birgu Local Council is a member in the AVEC Association, "The Association of European Cultural Cities" and was again invited to attend its general assembly where the Qualicities label was again discussed and also the new project ECOPAS, in which the Birgu Local Council was invited to participate in, but this time as a partner and not as an observer.

As part of the upgrading works being done in St Lawrence Street, the Birgu Local Council took the initiative to upgrade the central strip found in this street corner with Triq iċ-Ċentinarju tal-Parroċċa.

Workers assigned with the Local Council planted new plants and trees in this soft area.

The HSBC Bank Malta plc, honouring a request done by the Birgu Local Council, today presented the Council with a cheque of Eur2,329.27, equivalent to Lm1,000, to sponsor the restoration works recently done at the Melitensia Room at the Birgu Regional Library situated at the authentic Auberge D'Angleterre. The works done included the changing of tiles, new shelving and new doors.

During the month of July, the Birgu Local Council in collaboration with the Soċjeta MUSEUM, lead by the newly elected Superjur, Mr Joe Bugeja, is organizing various meetings for all children of Birgu aged between 7 and 14, where the children are given the opportunity to learn how to do the traditional known 'presepju'.

The meetings are held every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 3 o'clock and 6 o'clock in the evening.

The Birgu Local Council has recently entered into an agreement with "The Three Cities Foundation" to use the Front Office situated at Auberge D'Angleterre in Triq il-Majjistral, Birgu, as their permanent office.

The Three Cities Foundation is a non-governemnt organisation set up to provide free support, counselling services, training and education opportunities, based on the individual needs of its clients.

As part of the consultation meetings being held on the reform of Local Councils, on Tuesday 4th August, 2008, the Parliamentary Secretary for Public Dialogue, Hon. Dr Chris Said met the Birgu Local Council at the Council's administration offices at Couvre Porte.

The Birgu  Local Council was invited by the Mayor of the City of Ptuj in Slovenia, to attend the "Civitas - Meeting of Mayors of European Historical Towns".

Civitas is the name of the group, each country has got an exclusive ancient historic town, the development of which is based on their condition and on effectiveness of their historic cores. They joined efforts in order to unite their development objectives and make their voices heard in the EU.

The Birgu Local Council in collaboration with TCTC and sponsored by Victory Square Cafe, will be offering computer courses for adults, parents and housewives for free.

This 12 hour course is being offered to all those residents of Vittoriosa who wish to start learning the use of computers from scratch.

Applications should be received at the Local Council's administrative offices by not later than 14th November, 2008.

Today, the 31st of October, 2008, the Mayor, Mr John Boxall, together with Mr Lino Bugeja accompanied by the staff of the Birgu Local Council visited the Poste of Castille.

The area is owned by tenemant by Mr Lawrence Cassar and Mr Pablo Cassar who after a meeting with Mr John Boxall, on a suggestion forwarded by the Mayor himself, opened the doors of this area to welcome the historian Lino Bugeja and the Local Council.
