On Thursday 12th July 2007, 17 members from the CSD company of the Armed Forces of Malta, led by Lieutenant Joseph Degiorgio helped the Local Council in the rehabilitation of the historical heritage of our City by cleaning the fortifications surrounding Couvre Porte.

After several meetings with Brigadier and Commander Carmel Vassallo, as well as meetings with Captain Nick Cassar, arrangements were made so that the Armed Forces of Malta will clean the fortifications surrounding Vittoriosa starting from the Couvre Porte area.

The Birgu Local Council and the Fondazzjoni Temi Zammit have just started to form part of a consortium in the European Project called “Mediterranean Cooperation for On-Shore Accessibility and Sustainability Themes: Network for managing urban coastal areas” (MedCOAST.net).

During the past few years, the Birgu Local Council faced another emerging problem, parking in Citta Vittoriosa. Currently, the Council is in the process of introducing a residential parking scheme for all the residents of Vittoriosa.

On Friday 19th November, 2007, in the City of Pecs in Hungary, the Birgu Local Council was awarded and certified as a City of Quality, hence the name Qualicities, a project part financed by the European Union and which the Council was participating in for the past two years. The Birgu Local Council, with his limitations managed to work and achieve the title of a City of Quality for its City, Citta Vittoriosa.

The Birgu Local Council in association with the Malta Tourism Authority will be organizing a ‘Carols By Candlelight’, an evening of Christmas entertainment in Birgu on Saturday, 22nd December. It is envisaged that this event will be organized on a large scale similar in line to past editions of Birgu By Candlelight, and it is expected to attract a large number of people from all over Malta and Gozo.

The Birgu Local Council, with the help of the Malta Tourism Authority, has just installed new ornamental railing at the Poste of France, in the area of Couvre Porte. The Council was receiving various complaints regarding how dangerous this area was when one would go up there to enjoy the panorama.


On Thursday 10th January 2008, the Birgu Local Council, represented by the Mayor Mr John Boxall and the Executive Secretary, Ms Christine Bonello, entered into a contract agreement with the St Lawrence Band Club, represented by Mr Lawrence V. Farrugia, President and Mr Noel Gauci, Secretary, for the use of part of the garage at tal-Ħawli area to be used as a storage for the club's band stand.

For the first time ever, the Birgu Local Council to promote the Good  Friday exhibitions in Birgu, will publish an indicative map to show all the exhibitions found in this fortified City.

This map will surely be of great help to all those who during the Holy Week, visit the historic and maritime City of Birgu.
